About Annie’s K9 Orphans

Annie's K9 Orphans is a true no-kill dog shelter in Durango, Colorado. We have provided a safe haven for abandoned, neglected, and abused dogs for over 35 years. These dogs have a place with us until a well matched home can be found, no matter how long that may take. Since our inception, we have placed thousands of dogs in carefully selected homes and have provided life-long shelter and care to countless others.

By taking on the gamut, we are accepting the possibility that a quick re-homing, for some, may not be possible. If an animal is either too sick, too traumatized, or otherwise "unadoptable," he/she has a forever home at Annie's. The “Sanctuary” component of our facility shelters and cares for these dogs indefinitely. Sanctuary dogs are given the opportunity to become adoptable through training and rehabilitation.

Unlike some shelters, we do not receive government subsidies. We are able to keep our kennel doors open because of donations and our wonderful community of volunteers. Maintaining our facilities and caring for sometimes 70 dogs at a time takes a village and we are so grateful for the support we receive from the community. If you would like to support us, you can learn more about how you can help, here.

We have dogs of all types and sizes at our shelter. You can view both our adoptable dogs and sanctuary dogs by visiting our “Meet The Dogs” page.

WHO WE ARE

HOW WE STARTED

Annie’s K9 Orphans was founded in 1986 by Anna and Bill Anderson. What began with the rescue of a few dogs from being euthanized, turned into a sled dog rescue, and later evolved into the large scale shelter that we know and love today. You can hear the whole story from Anna herself in the video below.
